By Ingrid Underwood

Ho Chi Minh City, as it was re-named after 1973, is in the South of the country. Everyone who lives there still call it Saigon however. The French called it the pearl of the orient in their Indo China colonial days and they laid out the city to have wide boulevards and a café society feel. Nevertheless the skyline of the city is changing as the prosperity of Vietnam attracts more investment and industry.

The name Saigon still conjures up many feelings for Americans, many of them distant memories and these too will fade with time.

As part of the new found prosperity Vietnam has laid out a number of golf courses, and because of the fertile land and abundant rain these are lush and bordered by luxuriant growth. Vietnam Golf Tours has set up a number of itineraries to attract the curious and adventurous tourist combined with his favorite sport. You too could come and experience one of these Vietnam Golf Vacations.

The most economical and naturally the shortest in duration is a 2 night 3 day tour which will accommodate you at a 5 star luxury hotel where you will have breakfast included in your accommodation. Transfers to and from the Airport and the golf courses are by chauffeur driven car and are likewise included. All course fees as well as a buggy are included in your package.

The rounds of golf are at the fabulous Song Be Golf Resort, which allows a choice of 2 out of 3 courses to play. It is set amidst stunning scenery and makes for an interesting day out. Song Be is some 50 minutes from the hotel. The other Course is the Vietnam Golf and Country Club which is a 36 hole course set amongst 300 hectares of rolling countryside just 20 km (15M) from Saigon City. The East course was laid out by Lee Trevino. Both days out will be memorable.

For any non-golfing members of the player’s entourage, local sightseeing and shopping excursions can be arranged at very reasonable rates at the time of booking. Check with Vietnam Golf tours to arrange this.

It must be noted that Visas to visit Vietnam are not included in the tour price. Contact Vietnam Golf tours when arranging the trip to get guidance on Visa Applications.

There are a number of other packages which become more and more reasonable the longer one stays. From a 10 day Saigon and Hanoi Golf tour which takes in all the Courses mentioned above but also includes play at the famous Montgomerie Links Vietnam which is a 5 star golf links near China beach in Danang and is 7090 yards long, par 72 Championship course. This is a challenge not to be missed.

Contact Vietnam Golf tours for any information they can offer and to arrange a wonderful break in this beautiful country with its warm climate, beautiful people affording you a warm welcome as you tour it in luxury and style and play your favorite game. You will return home fully satisfied and will be happy to return.

All inclusive packages are offered for Vietnam Golf Vacations at the site vietnamgolftours.com. With excellent personalized services they offer you the true joy of playing golf in Vietnam.

By Gareth Tait

Golf is a game which is sure to push you to the limit. Everyone has been there when playing the game. You hit a bad shot and it all begins to unravel from there. You get so worked up and angry with yourself. A bad shot can spark it all off and from there it can ruin your round. Whether this be at the start of a round or near the end of your round it doesn’t matter. Bad shots are bound to happen at some point so its good to be prepared for such an event. You have to control this anger you have to put it to the back of your mind and get on with it. It’s hard to do this as we all know but I am going to give you some golf tips I use to control these emotions and keep them in check. Here are five simple tips for you to consider and put into use right away:

The simplest one is to count to ten, which can take your mind off what’s just happened. Take a deep breath and slowly count to ten. This will keep your mind occupied and keep you away from boiling point. It really can work.

Take off your golf glove slowly. What I mean by this is to remove each finger from the glove and hopefully by the time you remove your last finger you will have forgotten all about whatever it was that got you so worked up.

Chewing gum can be effective it is a proven method of reducing anxiety and stress. Top sportsmen all over the world use chewing gum and if works for them perhaps it can work for you. Chewing gum has been tested and it really does work.

Tapping your fingers is another method to take into consideration. Tap the tips of the fingers together or hold one finger at a time between your other thumb and finger and roll the finger like a pencil. This is proven to relax your neck muscles and improves your circulation.

Take a drink of cold water this will get the blood flowing and combine this with the fresh air you get out on the golf course, stimulates the endorphins that de-stress you. My favorite method of reducing my anger it gives me a time out and a bit of time to reflect on what has just happened and more importantly time to regroup and focus my efforts.

By Tanuj M

The Ryder Cup, as most people would know, is a golf competition that is held twice a year, between teams from Europe and USA. The tournament is jointly managed by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour and is held alternatively in the United States and Europe. The uniqueness of this tournament lies in the fact that even though it receives a lot of money from sponsors, the winners compete only for the championship cup and not any prize money. By their recent victories, Europe has successfully toppled the America team and now enjoys the top spot in the game.

The golf tournament enjoys a large body of audience and therefore, there are a lot of Ryder Cup packages that are offered. These packages cater to all kinds of budget and taste requirements golf enthusiasts may have. The best option definitely is to keep a watch on the official website of the tournament because that is where all information on the tournament venue and its associated packages is posted and updated. The PGA ties up with a lot of hospitality chains like the Medinah Country Club and provide a lot of Ryder Cup packages that golf enthusiasts can make use of. For information on these packages, it is best to get in touch with the concerned personnel as mentioned in the website. The staff is extremely quick with their correspondence and they are more than willing to answer any query one might have regarding the packages. When booking Ryder Cup packages, one has to make sure that one only uses the information provided on the official PGA website because there have been a lot of fake companies who have claimed to offer services but have only cheated people of their money.

Among the hospitality options included in the packages, there are the corporate hospitality chalets that are located in the extremely well designed corporate villages within the premises of the hotel. Generally, these chalets accommodate up to 150 people but on days that receive more footfall, more chalets are opened up than can house up to 300 guests. These often serve as separate venues for sub-events during the course of the tournament. If one opts for chalet packages, then one also gets added benefits of delicious meals, drinks, access to recreational facilities and parking. Chalets are often shared between companies.

For people who want a more personal accommodation, there is the option of the Captains Club, which is a personal pavilion that allows around 10 people to sit in. In case one is able to make one’s own lodging arrangements, then one only requires to book a Ryder Cup package that includes costs of grounds tickets and perhaps tickets to the International Pavilion. One must remember to fill in application forms for reservation only through the tournament’s official website.

In case one requires more information on the hotels that are located near the Ryder Cup venue, one can always get in touch with the Chicago Convention & Visitors Bureau who provides assistance with all kinds of bookings and planning.

By David Wakeman

Simply because you play senior golf doesn’t mean you have to lose distance. If you were playing regularly, you might have already modified your fitness as well as your clubs along with other equipment.

Should you still play, you usually make adjustment for age. You never need to stop the game of golf. Golf is most likely probably the most popular leisure games a mature person can enjoy without harming themselves or herself. You will need some instructions or tips about how to maintain that distance that each golfer wants.

While the body changes as you become older, you need to stay healthy. This is actually the reasoning behind doing a bit of strengthening exercises plus some versatility training.
By Thomas P Westerkamp

When you think about the greatest golfers of all time, Tiger Woods will most certainly be at the top of that list. Tiger has created an empire and has become the first ever billionaire athlete. The sport of golf has been missing Tiger lately. Ever since his scandal on Thanksgiving day in 2009, Tiger has fallen from the number one ranked golfer to 17th after spending more than five years at the number one spot. He showed some signs of greatness this year finishing in the top 5 in the masters, but the injuries to his leg look like they might disrupt his season this year. As a fan of golf, I have not been as interested in the major tournaments lately as I usually am. The best time to watch golf is during the final round of a tournament on Sunday with Tiger, wearing his usual Sunday red shirt, competing against a variety of amateurs in a sort of David vs Goliath type of scenario. Every sport needs star power to draw attention to it, and Tiger is the Michael Jordan of golf. Take a look at Tiger’s accomplishments. With his 14 major championship wins, he is only four major wins away from tying Jack Nicklaus’ all time record of 18.

Golf has not been the same since the incident on Thanksgiving night in 2009. Obviously I believe Tiger was wrong for what he did, but I believe his biggest mistake was going to “Sex Rehab”. Really? Sex rehab? It seems like any celebrity who gets caught in a sex scandal now a days says they have no control over it. They try to turn themselves into the victim, but I am not buying. All it takes is a little self-control. Why couldn’t Tiger just come out and say that he was unhappy in his marriage and take full responsibility for it? It wasn’t until months later that he held a press conference to admit his actions, and he waited until after he was out of “rehab” to do so. That is what I was most upset with him about. People can try to turn him into a villain for what he did, but they weren’t involved in his marriage and nobody knows how his marriage was going except for him and his wife. I do not support cheating on your spouse, but I have no idea how Tiger’s life was behind closed doors.

I hope that Tiger Woods returns to the game as a dominant force. The game is better off with him playing in every tournament. It has also been interesting watching him play since the scandal occurred. Golf is a game that relies so much on mental strength and if he is able to overcome all of the criticism he has gotten over the past couple of years, I will simply be amazed at how resilient he is.

By David Wakeman

It doesn’t matter how good you feel about your golf game, there is always room for improvement. When you consider how much professional golfers do to improve their game so they can lower their scores, it makes sense that the average golfer is too.

There are numerous different things that you can do to lower your golf score. In this article, I will cover the 6 best free golf tips that I have used to improve my game and lower my golf scores.

Free Golf Tip 1: Commitment – Everyone wants to improve their golf scores, but are you willing put in the effort? The most important thing that you need is a burning desire to improve your game. This desire has to be so important that you refuse to give up no matter what it takes to accomplish your goal.

This may require that you set new priorities with the time you have available and adjust your schedule in the process. At first you will need to commit more time to practice than too playing.

More than likely you will need to ask for help. This may mean having a mentor that will keep you focused. When I first got that itch, I was fortunate to have met a person that was ready, willing and able to mentor me. I went from a 12 to a 5 handicap in a matter of a few months.

Free Golf Tip 2:Managing Your Mind – Many amateurs don’t realize how much your mindset plays into their performance. There is a saying that golf is 80% mental. I like to add that the other 20% percent is in your head. Quite honestly you can have the perfect golf swing and still play poorly.

In order to have consistency in your game and see real improvement, you must have control over your thoughts. This means having a short memory. What happened on the last hole or even the last swing is done. If you think about it, your next shot will reflect it.

Free Golf Tip 3: Practice Your Putting – If you are like most, there are times during your day when you will have a few minutes of free time. This is the perfect time to spend practicing your putting stroke. It is possible for you to practice in your office, your home or even when traveling. Taking the time to get comfortable with your putting stroke will translate to improved performance on the golf course.

Free Golf Tip 4: – Know the Layout – Take the time to learn as much as possible about the golf course you are going to play. It goes without saying that when you play a course regularly, you will have a good understanding of the layout. Take the time to take notes.

Professional golfers have notebooks full of notes about the terrain on the courses they play. It is good practice to do the same. If you have never played a course before, arrive early and ask questions.

Free Golf Tip 5: Ask for Help and Use It – Let’s face it, golf is a competitive sport. When you step out on golf course, you want to play your best and beat your playing partners. You need to take the opposite approach when you are practicing. When you are on the practice range you should seek the wisdom and experience of other players.

The best way to become a better player is not just practice, but to learn from players that have more experience than you do. Ask for their advice and then put it to use.

Free Golf Tip 6: Mind Your Temper – Nothing will ruin a round quicker than losing your temper over a poor shot. It is alright to be competitive and question a poor shot, but not at the expense of enjoying the round.

If you are committed to improving your golf game, you will lower your scores. Take these 6 free golf tips to heart and I can assure you that your game will improve in no time.

By Alexis M Zamboglou

On the 10th of July 2011 the most talented players across the globe descend upon the Royal St. Georges club in Scotland for the 2011 British Open at the renowned Sandwich course.

The former no. 1 Tiger Woods is likely to miss the tournament due to injury but this shouldn’t really affect the overall scheme of the tournament, as the American golfer’s form has been less than impressive since his involvement in a tabloid scandal last year.

In actual fact, the Americans have a very poor record at the British Open which would suggest that any of the British players at the top of the market are likely to live up to their expectations.

Lee Westwood will most certainly be the favourite for the tournament, but this is dependant on whether he performs to his ability at the 2011 US Open. If he can finish in the top 10 of that tournament at Congressional Golf Club, Maryland, then the price setters will be expecting him to repeat his performance of last year which saw him finish second in the 2010 British Open at St. Andrews.

Rory McIlroy will be another candidate for this year’s tournament. Despite failing to fulfill the expectations on his shoulders at the US Masters, the Northern Irish player has started to pick up his form once more and the home fans will be certainly cheering the Holywood youngster on.

Elsewhere in the field, watch our for German, Martin Kaymer. The ever improving golf star has been on the cusp of a major title for quite a while so it would be no surprise to see him go one step better and lift the prestigious title at the Royal St. Georges. Who will grasp British Open glory? Only time will tell in this great golfing race.

If you want to know the best way to follow the action at the 2011 British Open, then follow these handy steps:

1. Google the words ‘shot-tracker’, this tool allows you to follow every shot at Royal St. Georges

2. Live leaderboard – this will allow you to keep an eye on the standings as it happens and what players are scoring the best rounds.

3. Follow the top golfers on Twitter – many of the top golfers send out regular Tweets on Twitter, so if you want to get a real feel for how they are playing, then just follow them!

4. Keep an eye on ESPN and Sky Sports, (this is the biggest tournament of the summer, so all the sports channels will be giving regular updates on the action).

By Andrew Francis Collinson

Golf Faults and Fixes

Poor Positioning of the Left hand

No matter what your level of play there is no doubt that “feel” plays a major part in accelerating the learning process of your golf game. To add feeling to the understanding of the mechanics of the golf swing is an invaluable asset to the overall objective of becoming more than just a gifted amateur. Choosing the right golf equipment to suit your height and build should not be underestimated and I myself chose a good quality set of Callaway golf clubs following many practice golf games on the local municipal golf course. I was also extremely fortunate to find that the local golf club were offering a complete set of Calloway golf clubs at an attractive price in a golf sale. Poor positioning of the left hand was a major problem for me when I first started playing golf games and I made the mistake of trying many different manufacturers’ golf balls in the mistaken belief that I could get more distance when all along it was found that all I needed to do was to adjust my left hand grip.

This is an extremely common fault with average golfers just starting out in the game and it was during my first golf lesson that a professional golfing coach showed me what I needed to do to put it right. He said that it was extremely obvious from the way I was gripping the golf club that I would be having problems. A good example of this is to look at the positioning of the left hand on the handle of the golf club. This is especially relevant to average golfers who lack distance and tend to slice the golf ball. It is extremely important to feel comfortable with your choice of golf equipment too and to make sure that the fitting of the left hand on the golf club grip is correctly applied.

The problem is that a player’s golf grip can be deceptive at first inspection. What may look correct on the surface may conceal a can of worms beneath; you never really know until you open out the fingers and take a good look inside. The best way to check this is to hold the golf club as you would normally, open your left hand and check the position of the golf club. If the shaft runs high across your palm then it is a certainty that the ability of your wrist to hinge correctly is greatly inhibited. This is a fault that probably costs you both distance and accuracy. A sure sign that you have this fault is a hole being quickly worn through your golf glove on the fleshy pad at the heel of your hand.

Fixing poor positioning of the left hand

Having identified this as a problem we need to examine a strategy to rectify it.

Start by bending forwards from free-standing position feet apart and in spaced just line with the edge of your right and left shoulders, allowing your arms to hang freely in front of your body. Take note that when you do this your palms have a natural tendency to face inwards that is point inwards towards your body.

The next step is to take a golf club and whilst maintaining the arm position, place the golf club in your left hand making sure that the leading edge of the club-face and the back of your left forearm are parallel. As you do this you need to position your left thumb so that it points straight down the shaft and slightly to the right of centre. Try to keep your thumb short on the shaft as this is much more effective from a leverage perspective as opposed to the thumb being fully extended.

Now hold the club out in front of yourself and looking down at it you should be able to see two or three knuckles on the back of your left hand and be aware of the sense of feel from the club head weight.

If you open your grip again you will see immediately that the shaft will be running diagonally from the base of your little finger through to the middle of your index finger. This is still predominantly a palm type grip but you will sense that it feels more from the fingers than before.

What this small change in grip accomplishes for you is to free-up the hinging motion that is necessary to create the maximum club head speed through impact with the golf ball.

It does this because it increases the flexibility of your left wrist as you swing the golf club.

You will be amazed at how this small change can increase distance, reduce slicing and improve accuracy.

I am Andrew Collinson and I have to say that I just love the game of golf. This noble sport has an enviable reputation of having a unique brand of etiquette and good manners associated with it. I have been studying the most common problems associated with golfing amateurs for many years now and finally produced a meaningful guide to fixing most of them.

By Tyson Schmitt

Your golf swing should never change from club to club, but the difference between hitting an iron and a driver is you need more precise distance control.

Your first rule is to slow down. Every amateur player tends to try to put all their power into a golf swing. If you could lower your swing speed and not try to crush the ball, you will find your iron shots way more consistent. Proper rhythm and tempo is key to success with your irons.

Identify the sweet spot on your irons. If you ask most amateurs they would say the sweet spot on the club is somewhere in the middle of the face. That is where they are wrong almost all clubs today have the weight so it’s at the bottom, allowing the ball to jump up in the air. Clubs these days have the sweet spot very low to the bottom of the club face and closer to the heel.

Another rule is do not go out and buy the brand new technology club just because it is new or someone else told you its a great iron. Every iron works for some people and not for others. If you can find an iron set you can hit consistently with decent distance than stick with that set until you wear them right out. The one thing about golf is it is all based around consistency and anything that can help you do that is vital to your success.

Make sure you keep that angle in your wrists for as long as possible. Even at impact you should have some bend in your wrist and a forward shaft lean. If your wrists and club are straight down at impact than you have lost a great deal of power because you released the club way to early. I talked about this in one of my previous articles.

Listen to the shots you are making. You can tell a lot just from hearing the sound your shot makes. You can hear when you catch the ball fat or thin. You can hear when your club face was too far open or too far closed. If you can put together what you hear and what you see, you will be able to get a better understanding of where you club face is always. If you know where you club face is than you are on the right path to becoming an amazing golfer.

Iron shots are my favorite shots to play. They require a little bit more thinking of what shot you want to play. There are way more options then for a wedge or a driver. It keeps things more interesting!

By Gary M Stevens

Golf is a fantastic game that is believed to have originated in Scotland. You will typically be playing on either a 9 or 18 hole course, we recommend that as a beginner you start off with the 9 hole courses to ease yourself into the rules and etiquette of the game.

One of the attractions of golf is that it takes an immense amount of skill to perfect or improve your game, however this has in the past led to the game becoming ever so slightly elitist as only the well off could afford to take lessons and lower their handicaps.

This is no longer the case nowadays as the internet has allowed every man and his dog access to top tips and advice as well as simple golf instruction online. All of this comes at a fraction of the cost of professional lessons.

As an introduction I would like to go through the types of shots that you are likely to encounter once you are out on the course. This advice will stand you in good stead and get you off in the right direction. It is important that you understand the different types of shot as you can then visualize what you are trying to achieve when playing.

Types of shot:

The Drive- This will be your first shot on any hole and is usually played using a wood, however if the hole is short it can be with an iron. The aim of the drive is to take the ball as close to the green as possible in one shot, however other factors such as hazards and approach direction have to be taken into account.

The Lay-up- The lay up is a shot played from the fairway that will usually not reach the green due to the distance involved. The shot is made with a high degree of accuracy and course hazards have to be considered when taking the shot. You do not want to end up in the bunkers(sand filled holes) or behind trees/bushes etc.

The Approach- This shot is more often than not played using a high iron such as a 6 or 8 iron, it’s purpose is to get the ball onto the green ready for putting. An approach shot is usually played when you are within 140 yards of the pin. Club selection is vital when on the approach so as not to overshoot the green.

The Chip- The chip shot is used when your approach didn’t make the green, for example, you have over shot slightly or fallen short. The usual club selection here would be either a sand wedge or a pitch wedge, however once you become more accustomed to your irons and the distance they will allow the ball to roll on the green, you can start to use them as well. The chip shot should be played as a short lofted shot. It can be from anywhere within 25 yards of the green.

The Putt- Putting is the final shot and is played once on the green, it is a short rolling shot played using a specialized club known as a putter. The aim of the putt is to read the roll of the green and get the ball into the hole in one shot.

So now you have armed yourself with the basic shots in a game of golf, make sure you are familiar with the techniques used to play each shot and above all practice, whether it be at the range or on the course. Golf is a great game, however it is a skill that needs to be learned. We all have to start somewhere and as you play more, so your confidence will grow.

Enjoy your golf and look out for more super tips and advice.

Regards
